Charleston Cruise Port: What Is Open, What Closed, and Where Ships Dock Now
The Charleston cruise port changed for good. Carnival's last ship left on Dec 30, 2024, and Union Pier closed to cruise calls on June 30, 2026, so Charleston is no longer a cruise homeport. Visiting ships still tie up in the city, now at the Columbus Street Terminal about 1.5 miles from the historic center, and American Cruise Lines still sails from Charleston to Amelia Island. This page explains the timeline, the old Union Pier terminal, where ships berth now, what a port day looks like, and the nearest ports if you want a big Bahamas or Bermuda ship. For every sailing and fare, see the full list of cruises from Charleston SC.

Quick answer The short answer
Charleston is no longer a cruise homeport. Union Pier closed to cruise calls on June 30, 2026, and visiting ships now use the Columbus Street Terminal about 1.5 miles from the historic center. Only American Cruise Lines sails from the city, on an 8-night one-way run to Amelia Island.
Key takeaways
- Big-ship cruising ended: Carnival's last departure was Dec 30, 2024, and the full story of why is on the homepage.
- Port-of-call ships such as Oceania Vista, Europa 2, Viking Octantis and Scenic Eclipse now berth at the Columbus Street Terminal. Details are below.
- American Cruise Lines still runs 8-night Southeast Sea Islands cruises from Charleston. What still sails has the list.
- For a Bahamas or Bermuda ship you now drive to Jacksonville about 4 hours or Norfolk about 6 hours.
Is the Charleston Cruise Port Still Open?
The honest answer is no for big ships, partly yes for small ones. The port itself, Union Pier, is closed to cruise calls, and the site is heading for redevelopment.
The Timeline
The Charleston cruise port closed in stages rather than overnight. Carnival sailed from the city for 14 years, from 2010 to 2024/25, and the State Ports Authority decided in 2022 not to renew the contract, which expired Jan 1, 2025. Union Pier then served transit calls until June 30, 2026. These dates come from news reports and port records.
The table below lines up the key events in order.
| Date | What happened at the port |
|---|---|
| 2010 | Carnival began homeporting at Union Pier with the Carnival Fantasy, starting a 14-year run. |
| 2022 | The S.C. State Ports Authority announced it would not renew Carnival's contract. |
| Dec 30, 2024 | Carnival Sunshine's last departure from Charleston. It returned Jan 4, 2025 after a 5-night Bahamas cruise, and the contract expired Jan 1, 2025. |
| June 30, 2026 | Norwegian Jewel docked at Union Pier at 11 AM for an eight-hour transit call, the last cruise ship at the pier. |
| July 4, 2026 | Oceania Vista became the first ship to use the Columbus Street Terminal berth. |
| Oct 11 and Oct 21, 2026 | Late-2026 calls listed: Scenic Eclipse and Viking Octantis. |
| 2027 | Union Pier sale to Beemok is not expected to close until 2027. |
Why Union Pier Closed
Union Pier is a 65-acre site on the Cooper River. Under a 2024 agreement, the State Ports Authority agreed to sell it to Ben Navarro's Beemok for $250 million, and the sale is not expected to close until 2027. Beemok plans a mixed-use redevelopment with housing, shops and public green space, and would end all cruise activity on the site.
The city has its own reasons. A 2010 College of Charleston study put the cruise industry's local impact at about $37 million a year, about $95 million in 2026 dollars. City officials concluded that cruise passengers, who sleep and eat aboard, caused crowding without matching spending at local hotels and restaurants. Mayor William Cogswell said Charleston is 'not a resort' but a functioning city, and the city is updating a tourism management plan not revised in over a decade. Charleston City Council approved a special tax district in November for an estimated $400 million of Union Pier infrastructure.
What Still Calls, and From Where
After Union Pier closed, cruise calls moved to the Columbus Street Terminal, an industrial commercial dock about 1.5 miles from the historic center. Oceania Vista was first to use the new berth on July 4, 2026, moved to avoid the America 250 celebrations, followed by Europa 2, Viking Octantis and Scenic Eclipse through 2027.
Small ships are the other half of the picture. In 2025, 18 ships from 10 lines were scheduled to call at Charleston, with American Cruise Lines making over 50 visits. Only American Cruise Lines sails from Charleston, on one-way 8-night Southeast Sea Islands cruises to Amelia Island, and no mainstream line such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian homeports there. The full list of what still sails is on the homepage. The SC Ports cruise page lists a '2026 Port-of-Call Cruise Calendar' covering January through July only, and the port information line is 843.958.8298 with the email cruises@scspa.com.

Arriving on a Ship at the Columbus Street Terminal
If your ship's itinerary lists a Charleston call, this is the berth it uses.
An Industrial Dock, Not a Cruise Terminal
The Columbus Street Terminal is a working commercial dock, about 1.5 miles from the historic center. No passenger embarkation is scheduled there at all. Ships calling now are port-of-call vessels on longer itineraries, such as Oceania Vista, Europa 2, Viking Octantis and Scenic Eclipse, and their guests come ashore for the day only.
That shapes the visit, because you travel the 1.5 miles to the sights yourself.
Getting Downtown From the Berth
The berth is about 1.5 miles from the historic center. A rideshare or taxi is the other way to cover it, and no fare is published for that trip. Once downtown, the free DASH trolleys run three routes: Route 210 serves Calhoun and St. Philip and the Aquarium, Route 211 covers Meeting and King Streets, the City Market and Waterfront Park, and Route 213 serves Calhoun and Lockwood, Marion Square and MUSC.
Regular CARTA bus fare is $2 a ride if you need it. Another option is the water: the Charleston Water Taxi all-day pass at $17 links four harbor stops, including Waterfront Park and the Aquarium and Maritime Center.
Checking a Ship Call
Ship schedules move, and the port's own calendar is the place to check a specific call. SC Ports' cruise page lists a '2026 Port-of-Call Cruise Calendar' that covered January through July, so later dates may not appear there. The port information line is 843.958.8298 and the email is cruises@scspa.com.
Listed late-2026 calls include Scenic Eclipse on Oct 11, 2026 and Viking Octantis on Oct 21, 2026. Your cruise line's documents remain the final word on the pier and the time alongside.
A Few Hours Ashore: The Closest Sights
Port calls here can be short, so the stops that matter are the ones close together. The good news is that Charleston's best-known sights cluster tightly around the harbor front, close to where ships used to dock at Union Pier.
The Stops Within Walking Range
The walking times in the table are given from the old Union Pier terminal, where ships docked until June 30, 2026. From the Columbus Street Terminal, add the roughly 1.5 miles to the historic center first, by foot, rideshare or free DASH trolley. Every stop below is free to enter, and the times come from port and visitor guides.
| Stop | What it is | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Waterfront Park | 8 acres along about half a mile of the Cooper River, open daily 6 a.m. to midnight, with a 1,200-foot palmetto-lined esplanade. About a 4-minute walk from Union Pier. | Free |
| Pineapple Fountain | The fountain in front of the City Gallery, inside Waterfront Park, about a 4-minute walk from Union Pier. | Free |
| Rainbow Row | 13 pastel Georgian houses at 79 to 107 East Bay Street, all privately owned, so it is a look-from-the-street stop. Rainbow Row and The Battery are each about a 15-minute walk south of Union Pier. | Free |
| The Battery and White Point Garden | The seawall promenade and the 5.7-acre garden behind it, a public park since 1837. Reached on the same walk south from Union Pier, and about 45 minutes covers the seawall, garden and Murray Boulevard. | Free |
| City Market | At 188 Meeting Street, about a 5-minute walk from Union Pier, open daily 9:30 am to 5:30 pm and closed only Christmas Day. | Free to enter |
| Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center | At 340 Concord Street in Liberty Square, free and open daily 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with restrooms and a water fill station. The ferry to the fort itself is paid. | Free |
A Harbor Cruise in a Port Day
You are already at a working harbor, so a boat trip is the easiest add-on. The Charleston Harbor History Cruise on the Carolina Belle is a 90-minute narrated tour from the Charleston Maritime Center at 10 Wharfside Street for $47.50, passing more than 75 sights, and the ticket covers the cruise only.
To reach Fort Sumter itself, the Fort Sumter Ferry and Fort Entry costs $43 and takes about 2 1/4 hours with about an hour on the island, departing from Liberty Square or Patriots Point. If you would rather stay afloat and hop, the water taxi all-day pass at $17 runs hourly between four stops for the same hops. Note that some sailings from Charleston are one-way routes, and the Charleston-to-Amelia Island route on American Cruise Lines is one-way, not closed-loop.

The Old Union Pier Terminal
Everything in this section is history. None of the addresses, gates, prices or hours below apply now.
How the Carnival Terminal Worked
The former Carnival terminal stood at 196 Concord Street at the foot of Market Street, with entry through Gate 2 at Concord and Laurens Streets. Taxi and drop-off traffic used Gate 1 at 32 Washington Street. Drivers coming on I-26 followed brown-and-white 'CRUISE' signs at exit 219-B, and taxis, limos and hotel shuttles waited in the lot in front of the terminal.
Parking on SC Ports property cost $17 a day for vehicles up to 20 feet and $50 a day for oversize campers and RVs, though a 2023 bulletin said $21 a day. The parking came with free shuttle buses to the terminal, and vehicles with handicap permits parked free. Check-in and vehicle and luggage acceptance ran 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with early luggage drop from 9 to 11 a.m. Charleston International Airport was about 10 miles from the terminal, a 20-30 minute drive, and the North Charleston Amtrak station was also about 10 miles away, allowing at least 30 minutes.
None of this applies now. There is no cruise parking, no gates and no check-in at Union Pier after June 30, 2026.
The American Cruise Lines Meeting Point
The only line still sailing from Charleston does not use Union Pier at all. American Cruise Lines' fare includes a 1-night North Charleston Marriott stay, and guests meet in the hotel lobby on cruise morning. ACL guests do not board at the old terminal, and the exact boarding pier is not confirmed on an official page.
The 8-night Southeast Sea Islands cruise then runs one-way from Charleston to Amelia Island, Florida, with stops at Beaufort and Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, Savannah, Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island in Georgia, and Intracoastal Waterway cruising on ships carrying fewer than 120 passengers.

Charleston Cruise Port Questions
Is the Charleston cruise port still open?
Not for cruise ships at Union Pier. Union Pier closed to all cruise calls on June 30, 2026, when Norwegian Jewel made the final call, docking at 11 AM for an eight-hour transit visit. Port-of-call ships now use the Columbus Street Terminal instead. See the full timeline above.
Why is Carnival no longer sailing from Charleston?
The S.C. State Ports Authority declined to renew Carnival's contract, a decision announced in 2022, and the contract expired Jan 1, 2025 after Carnival's last departure on Dec 30, 2024. The city also concluded cruise passengers caused crowding without matching local hotel and restaurant spending. The homepage port status section has the background.
Which cruise line sails out of Charleston?
Only American Cruise Lines, which runs 8-night Southeast Sea Islands cruises from Charleston one-way to Amelia Island, Florida, on ships carrying fewer than 120 passengers. No mainstream line homeports there. The what still sails section lists the options.
Where do cruise ships dock in Charleston now?
At the Columbus Street Terminal, an industrial commercial dock about 1.5 miles from the historic center. Oceania Vista was the first ship to use it on July 4, 2026, followed by Europa 2, Viking Octantis and Scenic Eclipse. Details are in the Columbus Street section.
Can I park at the Charleston cruise port?
No. Cruise parking ended with the terminal. Under Carnival, parking on SC Ports property was $17 a day for vehicles up to 20 feet and $50 a day for oversize, with free shuttles, but those arrangements no longer apply and there is no cruise embarkation at Union Pier. See the old terminal section.
Where is the nearest cruise port to Charleston for a Bahamas cruise?
Jacksonville. JAXPORT is about 240 miles and roughly a 4-hour drive from Charleston, with Carnival sailing year-round 4- and 5-day Bahamas cruises and Norwegian seasonally. Norfolk is about 6 hours for Bermuda and Bahamas runs on Carnival Sunshine. The Bahamas cruise from Charleston page has the sailings.
